Walter Mitty, a daydreaming pulp-fiction writer with an overprotective mother, likes to imagine that he is a hero who experiences fantastic adventures. His dream becomes true when he accidentally meets a mysterious woman who hands him a little black book. You can tell the cast worked hard to keep their composure during some of Danny Kaye's antics. • KNOCK ON WOOD - Paramount, 1954. Starring Danny Kaye, Mai Zetterling, Torin Thatcher, David Burns. Ventriloquist Jerry Morgan has failed with another love affair. The reason: when the relationship reaches the point when it is time to discuss marriage, his doll Clarence becomes mean and jealous. One of Kaye's funniest performances, showcasing his comedic, singing, and dancing talents to the fullest. Not to be missed is the movie's finale, where Kaye finds himself on the stage of a London ballet as the leading dancer while simultaneously trying to escape from the bad guys. The Emperor Kublai Khan is a kindly fellow, but his evil aide Ahmed wants to get rid of Kublai Khan so he can be emperor, and to get rid of Marco Polo so he can marry the princess. When the rich single gentlemen Mr. Bingley and Mr. Darcy come to live nearby, the Bennets have high hopes. The mysterious figure known as the Vampire comes to England to complete experiments in his mad bid to gain control of the world. When the radar-controlled Robot which he had ordered shipped to him is delivered instead to Mother Riley, the Vampire, through radar control, has the Robot transport itself as well as Mother Riley to the proper destination...as the old lady goes into a whirl of side-splitting action in a determined effort to frustrate the plans of the sinister Vampire. • TOM THUMB - MGM, 1958. Stars Russ Tamblyn, Alan Young, Terry-Thomas, Peter sellers. In 1958, filming the Grimm fairy tale about a thumb-sized boy was no easy task. There were no computers to help with the miniaturization. But MGM assembled a team that produced a remarkable blend of live action, animation, and puppets that was innovative for its time.
