  • THE CAT AND THE CANARY - Paramount, 1939. Starring Bob Hope, Paulette Goddard, Gale Sondergaard, Douglass Montgomery and George Zucco. Hope has one great one-liner after another in this old dark house mystery-comedy. Ten years have passed since the death of millionaire, Cyrus Norman. Cyrus' attorney Cosby has gathered Cyrus' 6 remaining relatives to his New Orleans' mansion for the reading of his will. To the others disappointment, Joyce (Paulett Goddard) is the sole heir. However, due to a streak of insanity running in the family, a second will has been made in case Joyce falls victim to it. This puts Joyce in danger. Suddenly, Miss Lu, Cyrus' maid, appears and warns them that the spirits have told her that one of them will die that night. Following this, Hendrick, a prison guard, warns them that, "The Cat", a homicidal maniac has escaped. This sets up Cyrus' relatives with a night filled with murders, mysteries and intrigue.
An almost perfect film, "The Cat and the Canary" will have you laughing aloud while peeking through your fingers. • NEW FACES OF 1937 - RKO, 1937. Stars Milton Berle, Parkyakarkus, Joe Penner, The Three Chocolateers and Harriet Hilliard. "New Faces" is filled with 1930s comedians. Joe "Wanna Buy a Duck" Penner is top billed, but it is Milton Berle who really drives the film. He is truly funny in this film and it is his best cinema showcase. Also on hand are Harry Einstein (Parkyakarkus)(the father of Albert Brooks and "Super Dave" Bob Einstein), and Bert "The Mad Russian" Gordon. Harriet Nelson, this time without Ozzie, is the leading lady. Very funny musical numbers includes one with a teenage Ann Miller and a big final with Harriet and The Three Chocoleteers. Beautiful C&C TV Dupont original in Like New condition on 2x2000' reels - $499

  • BLOCK-HEADS - 1938 Laurel and Hardy comedy with James Finlayson, Billy Gilbert and Ben Turpin. It's 1938, but Stan doesn't know the war is over; he's still patrolling the trenches in France, and shoots down a French aviator. Oliver sees his old chum's picture in the paper and goes to visit Stan at the Soldier's Home. Thinking Stan is disabled (it's just that he's sitting on his leg), Oliver takes pity on him and takes him home for a nice home-cooked meal. But Oliver's wife has other ideas and leaves him to fend for himself. After blowing up the kitchen, Oliver is helped by his next-door neighbor Mrs. Gilbert until the big-game hunting Mr. Gilbert comes home unexpectedly, carrying a shotgun. Excellent dupe of a Blackhawk print with most of the original MGM titles. Mint condition print on a full 2,300' reel in a can - $199

A businessman and chess expert mysteriously shot in a locked room, dies clutching some chess pieces. Police are baffled, and finally abandon the case. Six months later, victim's daughter Leah Manning, stung by a scurrilous book about the case, enlists the aid of Charlie Chan and Number 3 Son. • SHADOWS OVER CHINATOWN - Monogram Pictures, 1946. Stars Sidney Toler, Tanis Chandler and Mantan Moreland. Charlie Chan, Jimmy and Birmingham are on a bus trip to San Francisco, where he's about to investigate for an insurance company the strange and gruesome deaths of a couple of newly wed young women, all 'torso killings'. The interaction between Toler, Sen Yung and Mantan Moreland is as always fun to watch. Much has been made of Moreland's parts in these films. However him playing a scared bumbler is no different from Lou Costello playing a scared bumbler, and they are both super at it. And there is always beautiful Tanis Chandler. Outstanding density and quality original 1957 Kodak print in Excellent+ condition on 2x1600' reels - $299

  • CHARLIE CHAN IN THE SECRET SERVICE - Monogram Pictures, 1944. Starring Sidney Toler and Mantan Moreland. Charlie is called in as a consultant on a murder case by the Secret Service which was guarding a scientist/socialite who worked at home upstairs and threw parties downstairs. At one of those parties he winds up quite dead with no outward appearance of homicide. A house full of guests is the setting for this mystery story, wherein a scientist is murdered. Charlie Chan investigates, along with his two irksome kids. Certainly it's memorable as the introduction of Birmingham Brown, a character played by the wonderful Mantan Moreland to the end of the series. 1970's Agfa original print in Like New condition on a 2300' reel - $299

  • DARK ALIBI - Monogram Pictures, 1946. Stars Sidney Toler and Mantan Moreland. A public defender enlists Charlie to exonerate one of his clients, an ex-con falsely accused of bank robbery and murder, scheduled for execution in nine days. Ben Carter plays one of the prisoners and an old friend of Mantan Moreland playing the Chan family chauffeur Birmingham. These two had a nice comic act before going into films involving them in a conversation where they constantly interrupt each other's words. They know what they're talking about, but poor Tommy Chan played by Benson Fong is standing there without a clue. Excellent quality 1973 Eastman dupe print on a 2300' reel in Like New condition - $199

Near Mint beautiful theatrical density print on 3x1600' reels - $399

  • STELLA - Fox, 1950. Starring Ann Sheridan, Victor Mature, Leif Erickson and David Wayne. Uncle Joe's untimely demise brings about an endless parade of unexpected consequences. This is a very funny movie with a quirky story line. Ann Sheridan is Stella, a strong, level headed woman, working for the local insurance salesman, saddled with a family of leeches, including her two lazy brothers-in-law, Carl (David Wayne) and Don (Frank Fontaine) who work in their resort community four months each year and collect unemployment the rest of the year. When her mother, uncle, sisters and their husbands go out for a picnic one afternoon, the drunken uncle starts a fight with Carl, trips on a tree root, and strikes his head on a rock. The family decides that no one will believe they didn't kill Uncle Joe, so bury him in a field and go home. Excellent+ to Like New original print on 2x1600' reels - $199

  • STORMY WEATHER - Fox, 1943. Starring Lena Horne, Bill Robinson, Cab Calloway and The Nicholas Brothers, Fats Waller. A fantastic piece of entertainment and a classic. This was Fats Waller's last screen performance. Here are a number of legendary performers captured for the ages on film. As great as they were, none appeared in more than a handful of movies. Their greatest work was doubtless performed in stage shows and night clubs, but at least we have "Stormy Weather", a variety show with its acts strung together by the thinnest of plots (typical, by the way, of many musicals of its time) and featuring the most talented black entertainers of generations. A fabulous quality original 1978 Eastman print with a new variable area sound track and in absolutely Mint condition. You will never find a better quality or condition print. On 2x1600' Goldberg reels in cans  - $1,199

Brothers Paul and Joe Fabrini run a trucking business in California mainly shipping fruit from farms to the markets in Los Angeles. They struggle to make ends meet in the face of corrupt businessmen and intense competition. This is one of George Rafts better performances, and Ida Lupino is excellent as the woman he scorns. Ann Sheridan is very good as the woman he loves. Humphrey Bogart in a supporting role is very good as Rafts brother. Alan Hale Sr. does a fine job as Lupinos husband. Great quality dupe print, Excellent+ to Like New on 2000' and 1600' reels - $299

  •  EAST END CHANT (LIMEHOUSE BLUES) - Paramount, 1934. Atmospheric crime drama starring George Raft, Jean Parker and Anna May Wong. • GRAND EXIT - Columbia, 1935. Stars Ann Southern and Edmund Lowe.  A dashing insurance company investigator tries to catch an arsonist before they can strike again. This suspenseful little programmer has a clever story with some brisk dialog that keeps things going merrily along while the chase for the arsonist consumes most of the plot, distinguished by several spectacular and real fire scenes that probably came from newsreel footage. Good, tough dialogue and nice pacing by director Kenton. Beautiful 1958 Kodak print in Excellent+ condition on 2x1600' reels - $199

  • HALLELUJHA, I'M A BUM (Hallelujah, I'm a Tramp) - Lewis Milestone Productions, 1933. Musical comedy/drama starring Al Jolson, Frank Morgan, Harry Langdon, Chester Conklin and Madge Evans. A New York tramp (Jolson) falls in love with the mayor's amnesiac girlfriend after rescuing her from a suicide attempt. To call this film "unusual" feels like a thundering understatement. Hallelujah, I'm a Bum is so strikingly original, so unlike anything else Hollywood ever attempted, one hardly knows where to begin in talking about it. What can you say about a musical-comedy-drama with satirical touches made in the darkest days of the Depression that celebrates the superiority of happy-go-lucky hobo life, centered on a motley gang of homeless people who live in Central Park and consider "work" a dirty word? What if the unofficial leader of these hobos is none other than Al Jolson, that brash show biz legend who, in this incarnation, is a humble tramp nicknamed 'Bumper' who pals around with a young black sidekick called 'Acorn'? And just to add to the incongruity, what if fading silent comedy star Harry Langdon is added to the mix as a trash collector called 'Egghead' who spouts Marxist rhetoric and warns his cohorts that the Revolution is imminent? Speaking of odd casting, what if the romantic lead of the story, the melancholy, middle-aged Mayor of New York City, is played by the Wizard of Oz himself, Frank Morgan? Like New top quality original print on 2x1600' reels. Public Domain - $399

  • RODEO KING AND THE SENIORITA - Republic, 1951 western starring Rex Allen, Buddy Ebsen, Mary Ellen Kay and Roy Barcroft. It has a Roman horse jump, a chariot race, a stage coach race, a horse race, a rodeo and not one but three fights between Allen and perennial heavy Roy Barcroft all crammed into its 67 minute running time. Of course Rex gets to sing a couple of songs too. Even at this late stage in the "B" western genre, Republic was still turning out a better product than any of the other studios.
